In January 2010 we decided it had become essential to completely renovate the outside of the building. As the building is a listed monument it is protected and therefore permission had to be gained to complete the work. The project took a year to plan and involved specialists in paint wood and restoration. The use of specialist lime paints for the walls was essential in order for the inner wood structure to breathe and to allow salt to escape from the slate base walls. The balance of temperature and humidity within the walls is crucial to preserve the integrity of the building. In places the walls are nearly a meter thick and made of slate and lime morter. The Oak fachwerk also had to be carefully restored and the new oaks carefully choosen and fitted in order to last another few hundred years. The woodworm had caused some major damage along with damp in the woodwork. The primary cause of this was ivy which had been encouraged to grow up the building for decoration. It has proved however to be enourmously descructive and very costly to repair. We have put together some photos of the work, before and after which we hope you find interesting.
