Your historic holiday home on the Mosel

A little bit about the wine!

The areas known as Rhineland Pfalz is without doubt one of the best wine producing regions of the world. The Riesling grape is the king of the grapes in Germany and the wine is equally respected. Throughout the world the German wines are often and sadly underrated. Once you have visited this unique area however you will soon agree that the diversity and quality of the wines are second to none. There are hundreds of small independent producers who grow and produce their wines with love and care. The vines are often grown on near vertical slopes where they catch the sun for much longer. You can spend years tasting and sampling each producers wines and what a great way to use your time. We are fortunate enough to live right in the middle of the Mosel area in Ellenz where the choice of wine is endless. In the next few months we will be stocking some of our favourite wines and adding more as we find them. These will be available for our guests to sample which will be great fun. Part of the experience for our guests will be selected vineyard visits for tasting and an opportunity to buy the wines you enjoy the most.

A rare few of our guests are seasoned wine experts but most are normal rounded human beings who just love the whole experience, a bit like us I think.
I have listed below some of the more popular varieties of grape and the signatures that they have, and a bit of fun too, also a few of local the wine producers that are among my favourites. I will be adding more producers in the next few weeks. If you would like any further information please feel free to contact us and we will be delighted to help where we can, or why not come and visit us for your next holiday or short break. We can guarantee a great time and in the most comfortable surroundings.

We hope to see you soon Mike & Maria.

The Riesling grape is clearly the king in Germany. This grape produces an elegant and fragrant wine with a little tingle! We have named our biggest and best apartment after this majestic giant!

The Kerner is probably my favourite, full bodied and I think a bit fruity, a cheeky little number. We have named one of our larger but cosy apartments after this naughty little grape. I am sure you will love it too.

Silvaner is a little mysterious. I often think it is always on the way to a masquerade ball in disguise. A little fruity and shy but a lovely friend once you get to know it. We have named one of our smaller apartments after this illusive little number romantic and with a warm familiarity.

Dornfelder a stronger contestant in the reds than the Spätburgunder in my opinion, a bit of a knight, dependable and strong in flavour. A great friend to the hearty meaty meals we all love. Cross sword with this one and it will warm you up. We have named our other smaller apartment for two after this lovely friend.

The Gewürztraminer. When I see this I immediately think of that wonderful region of Alsace and what a classic it is. A spicy and once again a little cheeky but never too naughty I think. A great drink.

Müller-Thurgau is to the Mosel what Elton John is to music. Everyone knows it; everyones loves it, a corner stone in the German wine world, Dependable and a great choice when starting out on your wine tasting exploration.

Spätburgunder, (pinot noir) the scales of justice amongst the reds of Germany. I think it's always the bridesmaid and never the bride but everyone loves her! Not as dominant as the Dornfelder and sometimes a little nutty but we love her. A great red for the summer I think.

There are many others but it's hard to be so creative for so long. If you feel like adding any thoughts or comments please mail me or better still come and visit!

During your stay you can walk through the vines and see how the different soils and slate makes each wine very individual. The mineral rich slate slopes around the village are ideal for the Riesling grape, these vines that are bathed in the warm afternoon sun create the very best wines. On the flats the Muller Thurgau vines flourish in the more earthy soil. The vines vary in age but each one must be hand reared and trained throughout the year to produce the best harvest and the greatest wines.
